Milling Meaning
The process of cutting away or removing material by feeding a workpiece past a rotating multiple tooth cutter is known as milling.
What is a milling spindle?
The fast method of machining in a milling machine or any machine tool is provided by the cutting action of the many teeth around the milling cutter. The spindle used on the machine for milling is known as milling spindle and its main purpose is to make the machined surface flat, angular or curved or can be milled to any combination of shapes. The milling spindle helps to holding the workpiece, rotating the cutter, and feeding it.
Advantages of milling spindles
Milling spindles are designed in such a way that they have certain advantageous features inbuilt in them such as follows:
- Increased part output
- Improved surface finish
- Increased productivity
- Better surface finish
- Reduced tool wear
- Tighter tolerances
- Reduced component overheating
- Elimination of mechanical drive in the spindle
- Machining of thinner components etc.
Types of converters in milling spindles
Vector Control Converter
- Wide range of speeds at constant power.
- Instability elimination at low frequency.
- Angular positioning of shaft.
- Emergency spindle stop in case of power loss.
Static Converter
Suitable for high frequency asynchronous motorizes milling spindles.
FCB Converters
- Ensures high efficiency within a wide speed range.
- Feeds brushless motors with permanent magnets.
- Works at high frequency (2000 Hz).
Features of milling spindles
- Milling spindles are available with or without power drawbar for
machine tools.
- Milling spindles can be high frequency driven, motorized driven or
gear or belt driven.
- Quality cartridge and motorized milling spindles are used for OEM and
end-user applications
- Different milling spindles have diffent speed, power and size rane
depending on the applications.
- Milling spindles can be used for all milling applications
- High frequency, motorized milling spindles are recommended for
high-speed milling applications.
- Hybrid (ceramic balls), caged, high-speed spindles are used in
milling.
- Milling spindles are available with different diameter, speed and
frequency range.
- Small milling spindles are usually furnished with light or medium preload bearings.
Types of milling spindles
Let us now discuss in details some common types of milling spindles depending on the drives used for the functioning of the spindle. These are as follows:
