Features of multi spindle
Different multi spindles have different features depending upon its size, speed and application. However, some common features are described below:
- Multi spindles like a normal spindle can be motor driven or belt or gear driven.
- The spindle housing can be block type or catridge type or flange type.
- The multi-spindle capabilities can produce anywhere from 1000 pieces to millions of pieces in a machining center.
- The machines usually occupy minimum floorspace.
- Quick changing tooling.
- Designed for multiple part fixturing.
- Pre-loaded axial and radial bearing packages.
- Extreme positioning accuracy.
- The structure built for dynamic operation.
- Features different spindle combinations, like single-speed, two-speed and two-speed with stopping.
- Other features that can be included are cross drilling tools and counter spindle for back-end work.
- They provide more stability.
- The structure is so designed that they provide less thermal distortion.
Quick-change tooling in multi-spindle machines
Traditionally, multi-spindles were difficult to change-over and setup. The conventional method of changing tools on a multi-spindle involved removing the toolholder as well the worn insert to resharpen the insert. Once the worn insert was resharpened, everything was put back together by the oprator and as a last step he would typically use a dial indicator or some other gadget to relocate the center. Quick-change tooling in multi spindles eliminates this last step, thereby reducing changeover time and stretching the flexibility of the spindle.
Uses of multi spindles
- Allowing imultaneous machining of like or different parts.
- They are time saving devices.
- They provide high productivity.
- Optimum flexibility.
- Provide a flexible production system that meets long- and short-range manufacturing goals in all machining centers.
- High speed is another feature of this type of spindle.
- Multi-spindles are fast and flexible.
- They represent the epitome of efficient, high-volume production equipment for small precision turned parts.
